If you’re a police officer in Ontario, 2016 might just go down as the worst year in history for drunk driving. The drinking and driving statistics may not have reached 1980-level highs, but it was a year full of tragic crashes and constant impaired driving arrests. It’s also been a year where, after law enforcement set up checkpoints and numerous anti-drunk driving programs, they realized that people still aren’t getting the message that you should never drink and drive.
Those rising drunk driving might be why the Thunder Bay, Ontario police decided to set up an informal twitter poll to see what people in the area really thought about drinking and driving. All they asked in the poll was whether their Twitter followers would drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
It’s pretty easy to see what they were hoping to see in the poll results: after all of the effort put in over the year, they’d hope to see almost 100% of people say no, they wouldn’t drink and drive or drive under the influence of drugs. Unfortunately they didn’t get that result.
The poll closed on Friday, December 2nd, and the end result showed:
- Seventy seven percent of Twitter users say they would never drive under the influence.
- Eight percent said they would drive a short distance while drunk or high
- Eleven percent said they would drive if they had no other choice.
- Ten people replied and said they would drink and drive, but only if it were on a quiet road.
To say that the police were disappointed in the results is an understatement, and rightfully so. Those ten people who said they would drink and drive on a quiet road don’t realize that someone else could be on that quiet road with them, and while under the influence they could easily crash into another car or drive right off the road. Anyone driving a short distance or because they felt they had no other choice could easily meet the same fate.
Drinking and driving, under any circumstances, is the wrong choice to make. It looks like Ontario police have a lot of work to do in passing that message along in 2017.
