File this under “brilliant idea.” Nightowl Bar in Toronto’s Little Italy is trying to make life a little safer for the city’s residents. Designated drivers get to drink for free.
And it’s not just water and soda either. In the belief that being responsible does not equate with being boring, the bar has a “drink menu for heroes” which include non-alcoholic cocktails, juices and tea. The bar recently entered into a partnership with Madd Virgin Drinks so that they could offer their products for free.
Moreover, the owners are doing this the right way, with no minimum purchases or other requirements. From their Facebook page: “If you’re a DD you drink for free. There is no fine print on this!” From what we can see, it’s a sincere effort to encourage people to bring along designated drivers, so that customers get home safely (and return another night to do it all over again).
Response on Nightowl Toronto’s Facebook page has been enthusiastic.
This is amazing! You guys are the best.
As the one who is the DD, having to pay for soda or water is the worst.
More bars & restaurants should do this! ”
The last comment is particularly appropriate. Some establishments and event promoters have started figuring out ways to encourage designated drivers, but it looks as if Nightowl Toronto has found one that is good for business. Let’s face it: designated drivers are becoming an important demographic. They are more and more welcome at gatherings, and they are being singled out as heroes by wise hosts.
We look forward to the day when every bar and restaurant has a program to honor and promote designated drivers. Till then, we salute Nightowl Toronto for leading the way.
