Prepare for your jaw to drop. Some drivers exhibit a disregard for safety that is beyond belief. One such driver appeared last weekend on Vancouver Island, and her recklessness will strain your comprehension. Fortunately, the evidence is on video.
A couple driving north of Nanaimo spotted a woman curling her hair while driving. Actually, “driving” is giving her more credit than she deserves: according to the passenger who filmed the incident, at no time did the woman in question have her hands on the steering wheel. One hand held a curling iron, and the other — no, we are not making this up — held a mirror. So not only was she not steering, she was not even looking ahead. Here’s the video:
Distracted driving is an epidemic that is not yet under control. We’re willing to be that this woman would not think of driving drunk, as most people are aware of both the dangers and the consequences of impaired driving. Yet she is risking her own life and those of everyone on the road with a practice that is just as lethal.
At 90 km/h (her reported speed), if she takes her eyes off the road for just 4 seconds her car will cover 100 metres. By the time her hair is sufficiently curly, she could well have driven a kilometer or two without eyes on the road.
An effort is underway to find the woman, and we hope it succeeds, if only to crown her with a “Worst Driver in Canada” award. Highway driving is hairy enough without the risk of being jacknifed by a blind, rolling beauty parlor.
