Every day, thousands of people get behind the wheel after drinking. Old, young, men, women, celebrities or sports players – it doesn’t matter who they are or where they live, people are still making the choice to drink and drive. That’s why government agencies around the world have reached out via public service announcements (PSA) for decades in an attempt to stop all types of people from drinking and driving.
If you dig through older drinking and driving PSA’s on Youtube, you’ll find some real gems. Take this Star Wars themed drinking and driving PSA from 1979 as an example – long ago, before there were ignition interlock devices to stop drinking drivers, and in a galaxy far, far, away, this simple message had a real impact on Star Wars fans everywhere.
According to data published on Statistics Canada, there were 90,277 impaired driving incidents in 2011, and over the past five years the reported incidents of impaired driving have steadily increased. Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada (MADD) has also stated that drinking and driving has claimed between 1,250 and 1,500 lives every year and caused close to 64,000 injuries. The sad thing is that alcohol-related crashes are preventable, and that’s why there are public service announcements. They serve as reminders that these crashes aren’t accidents, and they only happen because the driver made the choice to get behind the wheel after drinking.
PSA’s like this one are also great reminders that the fight against drunk driving has been going on for a long time. Although the setting for this PSA takes place in the Mos Eisley Cantina on the planet Tatoonie, the message behind the PSA is something everyone, even those of us on earth, should always remember – friends don’t let friends drink and drive.
