Sometimes not finding what you’re looking for is a good thing. The Ontario Provincial Police engaged in a cooperative operation with the RCMP and the Ottawa Police. The plan was to stop 700 drivers and arrest any who had been drinking.
Not one was under the influence.
This is good news for Ottawa. Citizens have been bombarded with messages for years, and they appears to have sunk in. If those 700 drivers are representative of Ottawa’s citizenry, people in the province are choosing designated drivers, or taking taxis after partying, or just refraining from alcohol when driving.
Let’s hope that all of Canada is following Ottawa’s example, and that the number of impaired drivers on Canada’s roads in 2015 continues to dwindle. More than 1,200 Canadians lose their lives every year thanks to drunk drivers. Each death is needless and preventable.
We can think of no better New Year’s resolution for the entire country than to bring this number down. It looks as if Ottawa is shooting for just that.
Have a safe year.
