We love this! Humor is used on occasion to discourage drunk drivers, though usually it’s slick ad agencies that come up with the witty campaigns. The York Regional Police did their own video to warn Ontario drunk drivers about their waiting punishment, and it’s a delight. Thinly disguised as an infomercial for a luxury resort, the PSA invites viewers to “forget about the outside world, and enter a tawdry fortress of solitude at “‘Hotel de York Regional Police.”
Concrete mattresses, “stainless steel appliances,” bad food, and steep price tag – the video covers all the consequences of drunk driving in a manner that’s both funny and slightly scary, once you realize that their really not joking.
Our favourite moment: “Our friendly staff will be ready to tend to your every need” — punctuated by the snap of a latex glove.
The very lack of slickness makes the ad better and more convincing than a big-budget production would be.
Bravo to the York Regional Police for taking a fresh approach that evades public service PR-speak and might even attract some attention.
