When you see someone in the car in front of you swerving back and forth on the road, do you automatically think that person is driving impaired? A lot of people don’t.
Even if that person is slamming on the brakes erratically, almost hitting other cars or objects on the road, or speeding, some people wouldn’t feel comfortable calling the police unless they pulled right up to the person and asked them flat out if they were driving impaired. That’s not a good idea.
But some people will spot a drunk driver and do the right thing: report call the police and report that person for suspected impaired driving. Some people will even go one step further and capture that person driving impaired on a dash camera. That evidence can help police when it comes time to prosecute.
That’s exactly what happened in Thunder Bay, Ontario recently. A couple were driving when they spotted a car drive through the ditch, come out of it, and continue down the road. They immediately thought the driver was impaired and called 911, then followed him and recorded the footage. Click the link to watch it and see the classic signs of a drunk driver.
You can see in the video that other cars just drove past him, even though he was swerving in the lane. By contacting police this couple ensured that driver would be taken off the road before he managed to injure or kill someone else.
Yes, it can be hard to figure out if that person is really drinking and driving, but isn’t it better to be safe than sorry? The classic signs of a drunk driver include swerving in lanes, speeding up or slowing down, slamming on the brakes, and jerking the wheel back and forth. If you spot any of these, the police will be grateful you picked up the phone and called 911.
