In Ontario an impaired driving conviction will put the brakes, even if its just temporarily, on your life plans and force you to deal with the consequences of that choice. You’ll have your driver’s license suspended, be required to install an ignition interlock in your vehicle, and the fines and reinstatement fees can be hefty.
That’s why it’s a good idea to always keep in mind that you have choices to get home after drinking, and in Ontario there are quite a few different options for you. Here’s a list of designated drivers in Ontario you can call when you’ve been out drinking.
Ride sharing services
Ontario, unlike British Columbia, offers ride sharing from Uber. Just download the Uber app and let them know you’d like a driver to pick you up at a certain time, and if you do it before you drink, you’ll never have to worry about making the choice to drink and drive.
Cruise Control is a service where a driver comes and picks you up and then drives your car home for you. It’s a little more expensive than Uber or a cab, but your car will be deposited safe and sound in the driveway, and so will you.
Weekends are peak times for taxis in Ontario, but if you call ahead you should still be able to be picked up anywhere you need to be. There are several different companies so there is a lot of choice, and some work with an app so you can login and set up your ride.
It’s a longer ride and you don’t get deposited right at your door, but when you’re weighing whether or not to put the keys in the ignition after a night of drinking against taking the a bus home, the bus should win every time.
This is a quick list of designated drivers in Ontario, but it’s a handy one to pull out when you’ve been drinking. Just remember: it’s far better to arrive home safely than never arriving home at all, so keep this list in mind the next time you need to choose a designated driver.
