Everyone knows by now that Uber and other big name ride-sharing services are having a problem heading to a few major Canadian cities. Thanks to licensing restrictions in spots like Vancouver and Winnipeg, the designated driver service hasn’t yet arrived to give drivers an easy and convenient way to get home after a night out.
But there’s no denying that these designated driver services save lives, so a new designated driver service in Winnipeg could be just the ticket for Manitoba drivers. It’s called Drivers ‘R’ Us Designated Driving Services, and it was recently started by a Winnipeg couple whose focus is to get people home safely.
Instead of focusing on the Uber model where one driver is assigned to pick up the passenger from wherever they are, Drivers ‘R’ Us uses two drivers; one to drive your car and one to follow behind to pick up your designated driver when you arrive home safely with your vehicle.
The benefits to this the of service are numerous, but the biggest plus is that you don’t leave your car behind in a parking lot overnight. Not wanting to abandon their car to have it towed or vandalized is one of the biggest reasons why people choose to drink and drive on a night out.
The Drivers ‘R’ Us service is different than Uber, but it’s not a unique idea. Operation Red Nose provides a similar service during the busy holiday times, but Drivers ‘R’ Us will continue all year and offer designated driver services at night or when you need a ride during the day.
Unlike Uber or a taxi service, Drivers ‘R’ Us drivers don’t require a special license. That could help them avoid the official rules and regulations that are stopping Uber from coming to Winnipeg and Vancouver.
More of these types of services could pop up in big cities if companies like Uber and Lyft aren’t given permission to make their way in, and that wouldn’t be a bad thing. Giving potential drunk drivers a safer choice to get home is always a good idea.
